wolf packs

Are we wolves?  If not, then why do we exhibit the same behavior as wolves?  On a recent long interstate drive, I was limited to 30mph (called limp mode) and observed this first hand - it was a harrowing experience!  I didn't realize how many truckers are texting or other distractions resulting in my being forced onto the shoulder to avoid being rear ended at 80mph by an 18 wheeler.  ouch.

Over 10 hours I had a front row seat in the wolf pack mentality auditorium.  Every 5 minutes there'd be a swarm of tailgating cars whipping past me - and then 5 minutes of no cars.  Like a german train, I could've set my clock to this repetitive pattern.

We've all gotten 'involved' with truck wolf packs.  They seem to be more frequent and aggressive in more remote areas. Ever been behind two or three trucks trying to pass each other and stuck behind them?
In the 80's there was a popular song called 'convoy' ... i was the 'friend of jesus (not) in a microbus' ... oh what a long way I've come since then.  But there's nothing like a car breakdown to put one back into reality.

Wolves get together in packs for one simple reason - they're stronger together and their alpha leader makes sure of that!

Not so with humans.  I think our wolf pack mentality (WPM) has more to do with facebook than survival of the fittest.

Like anything, once you latch onto something you'll see more and more of it.  So this last week I've spent watching wolf packs all over the place - in stores, on city streets, in mall areas, heck - even libraries!  What is it about people that they like to group together rather than have some quiet privacy on their own?  Are we afraid to be alone?  Are we more comfortable with others?  Is is city/urban vs rural isolation?   I am VERY comfortable without a wolf pack, and if I find myself in a wolf pack, I extricate myself as quickly as possible.

I like this balance:

but it still doesn't explain why car and truck drivers get together in swarms...
